Inventory financing is business funding used to buy stock, usually secured by that stock and paid down as it sells. Pinewater Lending, a small-business funding broker in Victoria, Texas, helps Victoria County retailers and wholesalers compare it with credit lines and factoring, then presents requests to lending partners, which decide and set rates and terms.

How inventory financing works
A partner advances money to buy goods, takes a security interest in those goods, and is repaid either on a fixed schedule or as the goods sell. Because the stock backs the financing, partners care about what it is and how quickly it moves. Fast-selling, easy-to-value goods are simpler to finance than custom, perishable or slow-moving items. Partners commonly advance less than the full cost of the stock, so expect to fund part of a purchase yourself.
Who holds a claim on the stock
The security interest is usually made public through a UCC financing statement filed with the state. That filing tells other creditors the partner has a claim on the inventory, and sometimes on other business assets if the agreement says so. Read the collateral description carefully: a filing that covers all assets can make it harder to get other financing later. When the obligation is paid off, ask for the filing to be terminated.
Floor plan financing, explained
Floor plan financing is a form of inventory financing for high-value items that sell one at a time and can be identified individually, such as vehicles, boats or large appliances. Each unit is financed separately, and the business pays off that unit's balance when it sells. Partners typically run periodic checks to confirm the units are still on hand. It suits dealers more than general retailers selling many low-cost items.
Inventory financing or factoring?
With inventory financing, the security is merchandise still waiting to be sold. Factoring sells or borrows against invoices you have already issued to business customers. A wholesaler that sells on 30- or 60-day terms may use both at different points: inventory financing to buy the stock, then factoring to bring forward the cash tied up in invoices once it ships. Factoring is not one of the six structures we arrange, but understanding the difference helps you ask for the right thing.
Retailers and wholesalers in Victoria County, TX
Retail trade was the largest sector by establishment count in Victoria County in 2023, with 341 employer establishments, 5,842 paid employees and about $203.3 million in annual payroll. Wholesale trade had 136 establishments and 1,653 employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). About a third of the retail employers, 111 of them, had fewer than five employees. Another 586 retail businesses in the county had no paid employees in 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2024), a different program and year that should not be added to the employer figure.
For a small shop, a single large order can tie up most of its cash. Before choosing a structure, it helps to know how much stock the store should carry at all; our retail inventory planning post walks through that. Opening a new store raises a different question, the opening stock order, which the retail store opening post covers.
Inventory financing beside a revolving line or a working capital sum
- Inventory financing ties the money to specific goods and uses them as security.
- A line of credit is more flexible: draw for stock this month, payroll next month, and repay as sales come in.
- Working capital gives one lump sum for a defined gap, regardless of what it buys.
If purchases are regular and modest, a line often fits better. If they are large and lumpy, inventory financing can let you buy without stretching an unsecured limit.
Five things to settle before an inventory deal closes
- What share of the stock's cost will the partner advance, and what must you fund yourself?
- Will the partner inspect or count the inventory, and how often?
- What happens to the balance on goods that do not sell?
- Does the UCC filing cover only the inventory, or all business assets?
- Which fees apply at signing, during the term and at payoff?
Financing a stock order in four moves
- Work out the order size from expected sales, not from what a supplier wants to ship.
- Get the supplier's quote or purchase order in writing.
- Gather recent bank statements and a current list of stock on hand.
- Compare total repayment across the structures, not just the payment size.
All six structures are compared on one page, the retail figures are on the industry pages, and Census figures for the county add local context. The process from start to finish explains what follows a request.
